Babywearing International of Los Angeles County has a library of baby carriers and accessories which are used for education at meetings and lending to members. Our carriers’ primary purpose is to be available at meetings for members and guests to try on and learn from, but they can be checked out at the end of each meeting to members to enjoy for one month. The following policies apply:
I have read and agreed to the terms and conditions outlined in this Lending Library Use Agreement. Babywearing International of Los Angeles County, including workshop leaders and assistants, are not responsible for any injury to me and/or my baby during babywearing. It is my responsibility to read and follow the manufacturer's directions for any baby carrier I use. Baby carriers may include but are not limited to any ring sling, wrap, pouch, mei tai, or soft structured carrier. When renting from the carrier library, it is my responsibility to check for damage or defective parts before checking the carrier out and upon return. I recognize that there is an inherent risk to babywearing as with any baby product. I further realize that, while rare, potential injuries may be severe in nature including conditions as asphyxiation, fractures, brain injuries, paralysis, or even death. I take full responsibility for the safety of my child while babywearing.
This document is for your reference. Please keep it during your membership so that you may refer to Lending Library policies as needed. Lending Library privileges will be granted only to paid members who have a signature for this form currently on file.
- Your Responsibility. You assume the responsibility for safely using all carriers and for inspecting the stitching and fabric on all carriers to satisfy yourself that the carrier is sound and suitable for use with your child, and you assume the risk of using a carrier. Each time you borrow a carrier, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless BWI of Los Angeles County, its leaders and members (the “Releasees”), for any harm that may result to you or your child from using the carrier, including any harm allegedly resulting from the Releasees’ instruction or alleged failure to instruct.
- No Smoke. Do not expose a carrier to smoke or smoke residue from tobacco or otherwise. Do not use a carrier where people are smoking and do not store a carrier in a place where there is smoke residue, such as in a car where someone smokes.
- Duration of Checkout. Checkout is for one month only, and carriers are due at or before the start of the next month’s meeting. Our Chapter Volunteers do our best to issue due date reminders, but it is ultimately your responsibility to be aware of the next meeting date/location (available on our website and our Facebook page). If you cannot attend the meeting to return the carrier, please make arrangements to return it by mail or in person to the leader nearest you by emailing [email protected]. To return a carrier by mail, please use Priority Mail with delivery confirmation, and provide the chapter with the tracking number. You may also have a proxy return the carrier for you.
- Late Fee. Because the primary purpose of our carriers is to be available at meetings for members and guests to learn, carriers are due at the start of the meeting. Late fees of $5 will be issued on the day of the missed meeting, and $1 per day thereafter until the carrier is returned. Exceptions include medical emergencies and childbirth, which may account for no more than one month’s extension.
- One per Month. You may check out one carrier per month, and one carrier-associated accessory (infant inserts or sling rings). All checked-out materials will be due back at the next month’s meeting in order to allow for continued check-outs.
- Cleaning. Carriers do not necessarily have to be washed frequently, and doing so will shorten the life of a carrier. If a carrier is dirty or in need of cleaning, please contact a Chapter Volunteer for washing instructions. Never (ever!) use fabric softener, bleach, or detergents with perfume or optical brighteners when laundering a carrier. Unless otherwise instructed, you may launder all carriers in cold water on the gentle cycle and air dry them.
- Harm to Carriers. Please treat the carriers with care and respect. If you ruin a carrier, you are responsible for paying the replacement cost of a carrier, including shipping and chapter processing. Damage beyond normal wear-and-tear or resulting from misuse will be considered ruin. Using fabric softener or bleach on a wrap will be considered ruin. The leaders in their sole discretion will determine whether a carrier is ruined.
- Condition on Return. Please return all carriers in such a condition that they are ready for the next person to check out. This means the carrier should be reasonably clean and neatly folded. If a carrier is returned without reporting a need for washing or normal wear-and-tear damage, a $5 “pull fee” will be issued due to the carrier being pulled from meeting availability.
- Replacement of Carriers. If a checked-out carrier is received in ruined condition or damaged from misuse, or is more than one month overdue, the carrier will need to be replaced and you will be invoiced (and responsible) for replacement cost (including shipping and a $5 processing fee) of the carrier. If a checked-out carrier is more than two months overdue, the carrier will be reported stolen.
- Suspension or Termination of Privileges. Any late fees or pull fees must be paid prior to checking out another carrier. BWI of Los Angeles County has enacted a “three strikes” policy: If a member incurs late fees or pull fees three times in a calendar year, check-out privileges will be terminated for the remainder of the 12-month annual membership. Membership donations are non-refundable.
